Built in Romanesque-Gothic style, the Cathedral of Siena, the main site of Catholic cult of the city, is one of the most famous churches in Italy and one of the biggest and marvelous of the of all time. It is a full casket of every type of artistic manufactured article. In architectural, pictorial and sculptural field, it fascinates every visitor who stops to enjoy it.

Originally born from a plant of the XII century, what can be admired today, it is also the result of following amplifications and embellishments. The actual dome, evidently of Romanesque epoch, was realized in 1263 and the lantern was build “in style” in 1667. Moreover, we kwon by a document of April 1259, that the great Nicola Pisano was paid “sei soldi” (six penny) for some works related to the cathedral.

Main actor of the project and realization of the façade was his son, Giovanni Pisano, key figure of the inferior part of the prospectus building between 1284 and 1297. In the first years of 1300 the amplification works of the Sienese Cathedral were concretized with the enlargement of the transept and the prolongation of the choir.

In 1339, a period of particular richness and prosperity for Siena, they thought about a very ambitious project of Duomo buildup. The upgrade expected the building of a new, enormous temple: the present cathedral would have had to become just the transversal part of an immense church.

The Duomo of Siena, thanks to the collaboration of many great Italian artists like Nicola Pisano, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Donatello, represents with its beauty an unicum for Italian art.
