“Choosing an holiday is pretty easy for us, we know the world enough and we have a good knowledge of the places we want to visit. It is not the same for the hotels. We like to read feedbacks on Trip Advisor, even if it is not our first selection criteria for the simply reason that not always the opinion of other people matches with ours. We love small hotels, preferably luxury boutique hotels characterized by design, located on breathtaking places. So, if we can, we ask as much information as possible to people of the place we are looking for. For our trip in Siena (city we had never visited in couple), we got in touch with an old Italian university mate of my husband (who attended Università per Stranieri 25 years ago) who proposed us 3 different possibilities for an hotel in Siena with the style we love. We visited their web sites and we finally chase Palazzetto Rosso.
We arrived in Tuscany on April 5th, it was a rainy day and the transfer from the airport to Siena was quite grey, so we had a bad feeling for the rest of the vacation. Hotel Palazzetto Rosso definitely cheer us up. The taxi left us right inside the heart of Siena’s historical center. The red brick walls gave both an austere and a drizzling atmosphere to the whole street. It was like, for a twist of fate, we were in a whirlwind space-storm that had brought us in the middle age (just missing dames and knights).
We checked-in in a gorgeous hall, an incredible mix between 13th century and modern age. An high roof hold by columns and decorated with rich frescos and pure design items. Something we had never find somewhere else. Quickly done registration procedures, the offered us a welcome cocktail (very tasty, by the way) and they showed us our room, after a very emotional climb on the historic stair (no worries, there is a lifter as well). The huge suite number 4 had a stunning view. From the 3 big windows we could admire an incredible panorama over Siena skyline, especially the dome of Santa Maria in Provenzano (the place where Sienese people celebrate the victory of their most precious thing: the Palio).
After the first moment of wonder, we started realize the room was even much better of what we imagined looking to the web site. The suite is divided in 3 locations: the living room with design sofa and chairs, the large bathroom made inside a yellow box with a crazy view and the sleeping quarter, where we could admire 2 great canvas by Cathalijn Wouters. All the furnishing created a sweet contrast between history and modernity, a balance who made our eyes be very happy and made us by so much satisfied for choosing this hotel for our holiday in Tuscany. For that night the staff organized a romantic diner for us in a lovely restaurant nearby. The colors of the evening painted the streets of Siena as an impressionistic picture and also the simple fact to walk was a true pleasure. At the restaurant ... (se goes on talking about it). The next morning we woke up early, around 8. I repeated the experience of taking a bath in that incredible room, my husband was quicker. We came down for breakfast, that was gorgeous. The main hall which impressed us the day before, was full of any kind of food: typical cheese and cold cuts, season fruit, homemade cakes, honey, many types of brad and much more. Even too much for a three star hotel. Looking outside we realized that day was sunny and in that moment I got a surprise: my husband made the staff of the hotel organize for us a Vespa tour (the Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck motor bike in Vacanze Romane) along the beautiful streets of the old Via Cassia. Another trip in the time, this time on the 50s.
This tale seems to come from some travel blog, but it is just the mix (little bit fictional, we admit) of the real feedbacks we got during the time by of our guests, who have come home with Siena in the heart and Palazzetto Rosso in the soul. This is a thank you note for all the lovely people who chase Palazzetto Rosso for their stay in Tuscany.
